I don't know about the short-shifter.  Yes, 1st in the 5-speed is down from
reverse.  Original 5-speeds came with different linkage so you could go easily
from 1st to 2nd.  You can buy this linkage or learn to shift down into 1st by
pushing down on the shifter like going into reverse.

pushed downwards to get outside of the "H pattern", or does the stock 5
speed shifter freely float between first and second and visa versa?
