Subject: stub axle seal
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

I am in the process of changing these seals on my 1982 air cooled Westy. There is a very complete write up of this procedure in the archives. I believe Tom Young wrote it up. Just spend a few minutes searching and you will find it. Because the stub axle accepts a 10 mm bolt there is a really slick method for pressing in the seals which only requires a nut and bolt, washer, and short section of pipe. Again, see the archives or the Haynes manual for a detailed write up. Removing the old seal can be a bear. Mine were really in there. I ended up making three evenly spaced holes in the seal with a hammer and scratch awl. I then screwed a sheet metal screw into each of the holes. I then grabbed the head of the screws with a pliers and pulled straight away from the transmission. By alternately pulling on each screw the seal came out pretty easily. The first time I did this I actually drilled the three holes into the seal. I don't recomend this because no matter how careful you are metal shaving fall through the back of the seal and are difficult to clean up.

Good luck, Jake
