its time for my second chime in. this is the deal with the oxygen sensor. the senor you have is three wire heated sensor. the two white wires are the heating element connections and the black wire is the signal output to the ecu. the order of hook-up on the white wires doesn't matter as long as they are both hooked up, because it is simply a resistive heating element. oxygen sensors work like this when they get heated to the proper temperature by the exhaust gas the produce a voltage, the voltage is sent to the ecu. the ecu uses this voltage to determine how to adjust the fuel mixture.

you can measure whether the oxygen sensor is working very easily with a multimeter. when it is working properly and you have it hooked up to a meter on the DC volts scale, the meter should swing back and forth between 0 volts and .45 volts. you measure this by "back probing" the connector. that means that you leave the oxygen sensor connected and stick one of the probes to the signal output connection and the other to ground. if you were to measure the oxygen sensor and get a steady .45 volts your oxygen sensor is not working properly as steady .45 volts is the default "limp" mode for the digifant system.

in one of the previous posts boston bob mentioned that your oxygen sensor was probably fouled out at this point by your current running problems. i would second that notion but you should test it first. he suggested unplugging it i think, until the system gets running right then plug it back in. what this does for you assuming that the senor is still salvageable is to allow the system to run at the default "limp" mode until you get your other problems worked out. after all is worked out you would need to drive it at highway speeds a bit to get the sensor heated up and the soot deposits cleaned off. once that happens you should be able to plug it back in and it should work properly. alternately you can pull the sensor out and heat it up with a torch to burn off deposits.
