Jesse,
Ace sells a neat sealant called Black Jack that is neoprene, its gas and oil
resistant and comes in a caulking tube. you can build up a ring inside to
fill just the ends. I would make sure you have a small drain hole in the
lowest point and a small one up top someplace to allow it to vent..  Its
pretty heavy metal so it should take along time to rust through. If you have
salt roads you might want to tap it with a mallet once a year to make sure
its still got some metal left in it or you will be draggin vanagon engine
down the road.
