used to do off road rally's in a jeep CJ7 with ford 9" axles. supposedly indestructable--until you physically smash the pumpkin on a rock. lil jb weld mixed up on the trail sealed it up--and to my knowledge--still is years later. got us out of the woods about 20 miles back anyway. on the same trip a ford full size pickup smashed its steering box. that one we had to guide down the very steep rocky trail for about 3 miles by putting rocks in front of the tires to make them go one way or the other. we finally reached an area we could get a trailer to. many many beer can and bailing twime fixes in my years of driving air cooled VW's. setting points with match books (almost perfect .016"). throttle cable with a paper clip. the panty hose belt trick--etc etc. beer cans make good shims (or soda cans i guess) and i also drive triumph motorcycles--always carry a lil wire and my gerber multi pliers--as well as a radio shack 3 position switch (the lucas 3 position switch--"the princess of darkness") very first ride on my current 76 bonnie had electrical failure--2 minutes later I was on my way. also hitch hiked a ride while back country snowboardin from a guy in a mid 50's international travelall (the lodge it was called) who fixed his shifter with a drinkin straw (although Im positive it was a snorting straw) to early inthe morning to think of more mike |
