We just got back from a wonderful road trip out west. About 2500 miles, strep throat for my six year old son, a soft clutch (turned out the fluid was ancient and desintegrated in Kansas), and lots of off roading in Moab.

We knew from our beach vacations on the Outer Banks that the syncro is awesome in the sand; but we had no idea how well it performs out in the desert on rocky trails. Mind you, it is a stock 89 syncro GL with 14 inch alloys and Bridgestone Duellers. On several occasions did jeep drivers advise us not to continue on the trails because they thought the syncro could not do it. We did not drive any John Wessel Syncromog type trails, but enough to get the heart pumping. Our favorite trails were Long Canyon, Potash Road-Shafer Trail, and the 14 mile trail between Tower Arch and Balanced Rock. The latter included everything from sand dunes over deep washes to rock crawling. SWMBO is now totally sold on offroading. We cant't wait to get back next year for more.

We continued on to Needles Overlook,Natural Bridges, Butler Wash, Valley of the Gods,Monument Valley, Four Corners, and back to KC through Cortez, Durnago,Pagosa Springs,Alamosa.

No mechanical problems except for the clutch. Arches in Moab fixed that for us. Great guys.

Stayed at Best Western Canyonlands.Kids had fun in the indoor pool. Enjoyed the Moab Microbrewery. Goulding's Trading Post at Monument Valley was also a pleasant hotel esp. their John Wayne collection.

No van sightings on the drive out; a bunch in Moab; a nice white syncro Westy in Cortez.

Moab rocks!!! ( no pun intended).Cheers,

Hermann de Boer
