As Dennis said, bum pumps happen. Around 91 or so, the original water pump failed on my 84, got it replaced at a dealership in Baltimore (this was before I did any work on the van myself). It failed partially at about 3k miles while visiting in Jackson, MS, for Xmas, the day before I was to leave. Luckily not on the trip from Baltimore to Jackson, or on the way back. Took it to the dealer, they looked in the computer, found the records of service, and had me on the road back to Baltimore only one day late! That time, it was good that I had the repair done at the dealer. Many stories of when it wasn't worth it at any of the Baltimore dealers will not be told in this email. I don't have all week to type that saga. Can you say years of misdiagnosed FI system problems? But several supposedly reliable independents didn't solve them either. Then I found the list. Same water pump put in at the Jackson dealership is still in there working just fine!!! So there is the occasional bum pump in a box.
