First.....check al the linkages from the gear shift back to the tranny. Be sure the couplings, bushings, etc. are not worn. If so, replace them with new and be sure to also replace any rubber boots, etc. Ken Wilford at Vanagain.com had a kit for this at one time. I am sure other list vensors do to. BE sure everything is greased well.

Second:........check the shift adjustment in the floor up front. BE sure things are positioned properly per Bentley.

Third: ......... replace the tranny fluid (if you have a manual tranny) with Redline MT 90. I had the "hard to get into first" problem in my 88 GL , and the change to Redline MT 90 soved all the shifting problems.
