Subject: Re: " you fixed it with what?!"

While on a trip from Maine to Virginia (was on I-90 in Massachusetts about 400 miles from home) in my '84 GL, I blew the short coupling (hose) that goes on a pipe from the right side to the left side under the pulleys. It was winter and I had my wife, daughter, and grandson with me, so getting off the freeway sooner than later was a priority.

The short hose section was so bad that it tore like wet cardboard. It made it easy to remove, though. Having no hose with me, I looked for an alternative and found a piece of of hard plastic drain pipe left over from installing a new sink drain in the house. The diameter was close enough so I cut a piece ... slid it over the pipe ... reinstalled and put hose clamps right over the ridges in the van's coolant pipe sections. I got water from a river that was about 1/4 mile from the highway, fired it up and, much to my surprise, didn't see a leak at my cludge.

Anyway, I was then able to drive to the next exit where I drained the system, put in proper coolant and was back on my way. I drove it on to Virginia (about 800 miles to our destination) with the hard plastic coupler in place before changing it to a rubber one.
