But the Touareg get around on camels, not VWs of any sort. They are sometimes known as the "men in blue" because the men ride across the desert on their camels in blue robes with their heads wrapped in blue turbans.

However, they are not totally committed to traditional ways. (Actually, they'd probably drop all of their traditional ways if they had the money to try anything else.) I've heard caravans of Touareg traders cross the Nigerien bush in the cool of night - smoking cigarettes and listening to boom boxes. Hooking up those double batteries on a camel is really tricky, too.

And they should definitely get royalties from Toyota for the use of their name, IMHO.

Sounds like you are saying the name wrong! Probably because you are spelling it wrong - TOUAREG.

The Touareg are a group of nomadic people in Africa - the Paris Dakar Rallye logo is an image of a Touareg - pronounced too-a-reg with the a being very soft.

The Touareg people endure all extremes and can go anywhere. I kind of like the name that VW choose for the vehicle. It goes with all their other African names, Scirocco, Corrado.. etc...

In a few years I think I will buy a Touareg - I can't afford a new one. The Touareg is only real alternative to the Syncro if you don't mind loosing some interior space and gaining a lot of creature comforts.
