Unless upgraded to a 1.9 or turbo, they are slow! Very Slow. 60 mph is about max cruising speed if you want any engine life. They all had stickers on the engine stating "This Vehicle not Suitable for AC". My experience is that they like to blow head gaskets, crack heads, and throw rods. Now, if you want an upgrade project that is a different story. There are many that love the Diesel. Be aware that many areas are beginning Diesel Emissions testing programs. In particular, they are looking at particulate and NOx emissions. This will limit tuning options.
