Mexico never imported the Vanagon or its ilk. Their factory built air and water cooled buses. Any repair will be without any specific Vanagon parts. I drove my '85 GL to La Paz several years ago. I got to Ensenada and was having a problem with the temp gauge going nuts. Later it turned out to be a head gasket leak.

I stayed the night in Ensenada to check the van and build up my nerve. The Ensenada VW dealer said he thought it would make it to La Paz (900 miles south on the Baja Peninsula) and back.

He was right. It went to La Paz and back. I kept putting water in whenever the reservoir was down and babied it to and fro.

Good Mexican mechanics can just about jury rig any repair. They have experience making do with what parts they have and don't have.

Good luck with finding lists of repair shops that specialize in Vanagons, George
