Do you have time for a drive along the Mosel or Rhine, lots of charming villages and castles. City tours are fun, museums, a harbour tour. Oh, and I have a great video showing me going into the gated red-light block in Hamburg.. you can faintly hear my 4yo girl saying " Daddy, Daddy don't go...." That was fun.

One thing I really regretted was not getting a tour of Airbus. Something about tours were booked way in advance. Maybe your connections are better than mine. Any kind of factory tour (like cheese) would interest a 6yo boy I would think. One thing that always amazes me is how kid's the world over love to visit a playground on a sunny day, make instant friends and be absorbed for hours, simple, cheap and you can get some reading done.

David, you wont' regret it and neither will he... they're only 6 once and it is a great opportunity for some bonding. Don't be tempted to resort to gameboy and tv either. Participation is not optional. Can't wait for the slide show and the list of goodies you bring back.
