I'd call it "in" the front differential! As you have to remove a series of
M8 bolts to open the casing of the front differential and have a bucket
ready to catch the gear oil in order to get access to the VC. The Syncro
Golf / Jetta / Passat has the VC external to the differential.

To be more specific the VC is not "in" the front dif.
It is part of the drive line and connects to the front diff input shaft
flange.
