OK I'm a klutz. There, I've admitted it! On the 5-speed shifter assembly there is a small rubber/plastic ring (part no. 251-711-226 "damper ring") which rides in a groove in the guide pin. Though I tried to heat this boy up before stretching it over the end of the guide pin, I managed to break it. Anyone who has installed this assembly? What is the secret to getting this ring over the guide pin without breaking it? If it is not installed, I don't think the shifter will work correctly as the ball will drop too far into the groove. Also, my reverse gear lock out has no plastic on it. Seems to me that this means there is metal to metal contact there. Anyone know one way or the other about this. Please ref. Bentley page 34.10.
