Jay writes: How about towing with a 1989 Vanagon 2.1 Liter? I want to tow about = 1000 lbs on a motorcycle trailer? Has anyone done it? Is it = recommended or not? And if so what kind of hitch should I get? Jeff replies: I've towed up to 1500 lbs with the bolt-on-the-tow-hook trailer hitch. Not a good way to go since it seemed like I could "feel" the hitch bar flex. Mostly I towed 800-1000 lbs with the hitch using a small utility trailer. But once I did tow that trailer with 1600 lbs of wood. If I was to do it again, I'd get the Dennis Haynes hitch (search the archives)...will handle anything the van can. The biggest challenge to higher towing weights with the van is stopping. The 2.1 should handle most anything up to 1000 lbs. Good luck! JB last van owned-'89 Wolfsburg |
