Back when I had my '85 (1.9L), I would routinely tow Beetles and KGs around to shows and such... At that time there was no formal Vanagon List... I had purchased a tow loop tow bar from Da'Lan in Shirley MA. Towing at speed up to about 60 mph, I just had to leave triple the distance ahead and start my braking much earlier. Now I have an '87 Syncro GL that came with an Ekhard Towing 1 5/8" receiver hitch. This is used to pull my '74 Apache Mesa pop-up trailer (GVW loaded: 1500#). My '86 GL has a tow loop mounted hitch with modifications to attach my '60's Allstate single wheel trailer (loaded GVW: 500#). The Allstate trailer is the coolest trailer I've ever owned... The trailer is attached to the hitch crossmember in two places about 30" apart. The single wheel pivots in the middle of the frame. You drive normally and back up normally remembering that your rear bumper is now 6' further back To view more of these unique little trailers go to www.singlewheel.com JonR Amherst, NH |
