I have owned vanagons with both manual and automatic. I did like shifting the manual, and felt more in control of my speed. I did not have to use my brakes as much as I do in my A/T. The automatic is nice because I can sip from my coffee while making a slow turn. In my manual I would have to shift while holding my coffee, and making the turn. I do find that I use the brakes much more with the A/T. Now that I have had both, I would stick with the A/T, it is smooth and climbs hills fine. I was just up at Angels Camp weekend before last, and it cruised as expected.
