Joy, In some ways I think westy's were designed for tall people (putting the top up, plenty of headroom), but also for short people (at 6'3" the beds are small for me and I think I'll cook while on my knees). My wife is on the short end of the range and has decided that lifting the top is my job - she can barely get it, partly because of stregnth and partly height. Sounds like you have the stregnth part down, but need the height. The step stool idea seems like it would be the best bet for additional leverage. As far as tying the thing down, you may consider a ladder from Gary Lee - these lean against the gutters and give you a stable platform while working around up there. Pneumatics or other lift assist mechanisms may be an option if you're willing to fabricate - doesn't the Eurovan camper use pneumatic shocks to hold the top up? I don't think too many people have tried it with Vanagons, however. One last thing to consider (and I know this isn't what you want, but thought I'd mention it) and that's the possibility of getting a trailer to store the 'yak on. These can be bought or made and are not too bad on price. You could put you're boat on one side and bike on the other, with gear stored in a locking box in between. Would require getting used to driving with a trailer, however. just my $.02 john |
