Thanks to all who helped with info on the separation of the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle. For my purposes using a puller sounds like the most effective and efficient method--quiet for my apartment neighbors as I'm sneaking in a no repair zone. Now I'm looking to purchase a puller--this is the type puller shown in Bentley with a threaded bolt to push out the tie rod end.

Where to buy and what brand/type is my question for those who have experience. I'm not sure if this is critical or if basically any"universal" tie rod end puller will work. I see a price range on these things from $10 to $100. Auto Zone wants $30 for a rental-this doesn't seem the best bet. JCWhitney.com has a standard type puller for $10 if you can believe it. Then they sell a "heavy duty lever-type" for "tight areas" which is two levers with the bolt on the far side for $18. Jc whitney's prices seems too good to be true when others start at about $50. www.vwparts.net (whoever they are) has a unit that looks similar to the unit pictured in Bentley for about $50.

I'm not sure how specific the puller needs for the Vanagon tie rod ends is as far a size and type--will it fit in the tight quarters. That's why I'm seeking list knowleddge.

I was pointed to an archived post by Robert Lilly noting the tie rod end puller needed an opening of 1 1/16" and showed a part number of P-36861 the same post notes an Ampro brand "Pitman arm puller" with an opening of 1 5/16 part number T 72069. I didn't understand if these of these pullers would both work or if the first with the opening of 1 1/16 was a critical size, and therefore necessary--the other for ball joints. Be that as it may I can't find a retailer of Ampro brand
