If it was sooty, there must have been a problem with the injection pump. I use heating oil to thin #2 diesel for winter use at the rate of 1 gallon per 10 of diesel. It burns great! The only difference between the two oils are the additives. I don't know about the sulphur content. I've even made diesel using 5 gallons of kerosene with 1 quart of SAE 30 petroleum motor oil. The motor oil lubes the pump.
