Interesting you mention this.

In my aviation days one of the things that would show up on aeronautical navigation charts was the location of patterns supper-imposed over a geographical area that were known as "Oil burner routes". One stayed out of those areas when they were "hot" or active, and there were ways to find out . Oil burner routes were practice run areas that allowed the military to conduct flight excersises in so that in the even of war or other need, the pilots and aircraft trained in those areas could just pick themselves up and super-impose their route exactly in another geographical location in the world. There was no learning curve. This process allowed pilots to train at home, yet be ready for instant deployment elsewhere without training delays.
