I have 233,000 miles on an auto '88 with no work. It runs perfectly. I doubt a clutch would have lasted that well.

While I drive with a manual tranny, everything I have ever read on The List says the auto tranny is stronger, more reliable that the manual tranny. In addition, the automatic is doable as a home shop project, wotking out of a standard tool box..
