A bulb thermometer like the one you have is good for slow changing ambient temps with an upper limit of 130°F. It's perfect for monitoring the temperature of your van interior.

The cheap infrared unit goes up to ~430°F (or something like that) and requires no physical contact. It instantly "sees" temps......no waitng around for equilibrium. This little guy is good for engine blocks, heads, exhaust manifolds, radiators, cooling hoses, race tires, injection molding machines, thermal formers, and so on. A real steal at $30.
