I towed with the GoldBrick (prior to it's engine conversion). That was an 86 2.1 liter. I tow a trailer with a big (6x6) ATV. It's around 1500lbs (probably a little more with the trailer weight factored in.) Unfortunately, my experiences are probably not too relevant to others as my towing consisted of....

Up and over a 4000 foot mountain on a dirt road, through rolling farm land (Shenandoah Valley) on a local road....and then back again.

Going over the mountain, I rarely exceeded 25mph going up (vehicle would overheat if I turned the AC on.) In the farm country, I rarely exceeded 45. It took a long time to stop, and hence I made sure I had plenty of stopping distance. This meant, I never really got up to very high speeds.
