Subject: how do i know if my front diff is bad?

I have a funky clicking noise up front when i'm going up a hill. It only happens after driving at least 30 minutes. The noise is also there when i'm using the engine to slow down (like down a hill).

The noise goes away completly w/ the driveshaft removed.

The noise also goes away if i take my foot off the gas when going uphill (or give it gas going downhill.) this is w/ the driveshaft in place.

The cv's appear ok based on the u-turn test (no clicking) and when i grab the axles there is no play in it. (one side has new cv's and wheel bearings, the other doesn't).

So, how do i: check if the front diff is good/bad? check if a front CV is good/bad (beyond what i did above) check if the front bearing is good/bad? Thanks matthew
