It worked! But first I sprayed some WD-40 on both sides of the latch. Penetrating oil probably would have been better but I did not have any. The oil definitely helped. Thanks Eric! (As for the responsible person, I think that it was my daughter.....

Someone has tried to open the latch without pressing in on the catch. Am easy fix is to force it back to its proper rest position. But mine you: find the person who forced it to begin with, and teach them that forcing things also breaks things. If they force it again, make them walk. Eric
