People think differently about vanagon reliability and if they are cool to drive daily. I have two now, a camper for excursions and a passenger van for everyday driving. My thought is that as long as the van is in good working order and is taken care of then it's just as reliable as many other cars - however, if you want new-Honda reliability don't buy an old Vanagon. Check out the archives and Vanagon.com for endless discussions about the weak points on these vans.

I'm not familiar with your conversion, but 83 Vanagon campers tend to go in the 3-5k range, depending on condition and location. Engine/transmission, rust (look at the seams), and overall condition are what you're looking for. From the sound of your email, this van needs some attention (no car should 'stall out' when cold, and if air is getting into the coolant then there's a reson which needs to be corrected). I'd have a compentent (vanagon) mechanic check it out and tell you what needs to be done. Then you can negotiate price. Too many people have passed through this list because they couldn't afford to fix all the little things previous owners let slide. Know what you're getting!
