On the Tristar I have, the air intake (stock) was on the right side (passenger side) and had a cardboard barrier covering the space behind (actually in front of) the taillight). In addition there is a tube above that for connecting down to the air filter. This tube goes through the member support for the cargo deck.

The drivers side has a similar opening (though there is tube, just a hole) and there already are vent slits in the side of the tristar.

There is still a gap (about 3cm) between the deck member and the "normal" top of the engine bay, which you'd have to seal off (it may be behind some insulating material) if you truly want to seal the intercooler away from the engine bay.

However, that area >IS< going to be exposed to road dust.
