Is the engine engine running rich in your opinion? The popping you hear out
the exhaust could be an exhaust leak near the heads
letting in cold fresh air on deceleration allowing the unburned fuel in the
exhaust to ignite.
I have learned over the years to change one thing at a time because you need
to know what effect the one change has made.
Yes I think you should adjust the valves cold to .006 ths and then drive it
until you can tell if the symptoms have gone away.
Treat the engine as if it was a solid lifter engine adjust each set of
rockers when the rotor point to that cylinder.
have you checked the throttle switch and disconnected the oxy sensor
