Occasionally the list enjoys hearing the successes of traveling! Spring break began last weekend, and after consulting the list for suggestions on what to check-up before a trip, my wife, 14 month son, and I piled into Ol' Blue and (with a prayer from my wife) took off for an 8 hour drive from SW Missouri to northern Iowa to visit family. Although we had hellacious winds (cutting the mileage to nearly 14mpg), and I couldn't exceed 70mph into the headwind, we had a very enjoyable trip! We kept the fridge on during road travels and it cooled well (I even ran it on propane once to see if it'd work well). I'd installed a jumpseat (thanks to Jeff at Vanagonparts.com) and believe it or not, on the trip up, my wife took the opportunity to "scrap book" a page while attending to our son in his carseat by sitting in the jumpseat and using the small table. We didn't get to camp (too cold yet), but I forsee the opportunity actually possible, now. My wife even said last night, "Although it's not very comfortable for me, I'm glad we took [the Westy] so that we had all that room! It was great we could pack food, suitcases, and even a wagon for [our son] to play in." She's not entirely sold on the Westy, yet, but at least isn't "anti-VW" and is willing to let THIS boy play with his toy... *whew!*...just imagine if we'd had mechanical trouble... We even rolled over 328K on the original transmission...wow...I'll just continue to enjoy it as long as I can!
