That would be the 1985 model year and yes, they're very different. One
of the most glaring omissions is the lack of the correct wiring diagram
for the early Westy. I've polled this list as well as WetWesties and
been in communication with a technical editor at Robert Bentley
Publishing. With the help of the members of the two lists webelieve
that we have properly identified the application data for the early
diagram and Bentley indicates that they will add the missing diagram to
the next printing.
I'll use this opportunity to thank all who assisted.
For what it's worth here's the breakdown:
1980-1981 Single fuse located under the driver's seat. (The wiring
diagram that is NOT in the current edition of the Vanagon Repair Manual
VV91. Is on pg 97.32-97.33 of VV85) Water pump located under the floor
of the fwd cabinet under the sink.
1982 May be either the single fuse under the seat and pump as above or
two fuses on the b-pillar and water pump in tank. (The diagram not in
the manual (or rather, on pg 97.32-97.33 of VV85) or the early diagram
in VV91(?))
1983-1985 Two fuses on b-pillar and water pump in the tank. (The early
wiring diagram in the current edition of the Vanagon Repair Manual VV91)
1986-1991 Two fuses on b-pillar and water pump in the tank. (The late
wiring diagram in the current edition of the Vanagon Repair Manual VV91)
