Agreed.
I bought my '84 in 2000, my first VW van. I still
drive it daily. I paid $300 for it with a bad engine,
and since have put less than $2500 into it, includeing
a used engine and lots of PM. The odometer quit the
first summer showing 82k. I now own a '90 GL, and a
'63 SO33. My family and I have had a blast in these
vans, and can't realistically replace them. My '84
vanagon has been more reliable than any vehicle I've
ever owned. It has left me stranded once, when the
wiring harness shorted right after I put the used
engine in, not bad for a 20 year van with unknown
mileage.
In summary, I'm hooked and I will be driving VW vans
for a long time... Last year I spent less than $400 in
maintanence for my '84, including oil changes.
