How is anyone going to "get taken" spending $1000 for an 18-year old Vanagon? It's worth that in parts alone.

IMHO, someone who spends +$20K for a +15 year old syncro camper has been taken, but in the end, its their money and they can spend it as they see fit; let the buyer beware. You can only "get taken" if you chose to; you can always walk away.
