On this topic line, how strong a Come-Along is recommended for pulling a Vanagon Westy? I understand that it would depend on conditions: winching your Westy thru the Wal*Mart parking lot is probably easier than yankin' 'er uphill out of a mud bog ... (Don't ask me why you'd wanna do the former; the latter is self-evident).

Most such winches are rated with numbers such as 1500 lbs., 3000 lbs., etc. Does that mean it'll pull a 3000-lb. vehicle across level ground, or that it'll lift a 3000-lb. vehicle right off the ground? How to figure out how much winch is needed?
