The Beetle, amusing as it sounds these days, was built for the Autobahn. Part of the giant Strength Through Joy public works projects immediately preceding WWII, if I recall right...

Never driven a Beetle, but I know my old '77 Rabbit would happily cruise at top speed. T'was nice not having to seriously worry about breaking anything, doing that...
