Hi Mark,

My answer to this problem was to screw a 4" square metal plate into the centre of the roofrack, and attach a short magnetic antenna to it. The metal plate is connected to the body of the bus with a small wire that terminates at the bracket holding down the pop-top canvas.

This isn't the best solution in terms of reception, but it does offer the least amount of visible deformation to the camper.

The best westy-mounted CB Radio I have encountered thus far belongs to Jamie Rivers, who has a 108" whip antenna mounted to his trailer hitch. His radio always reads 5-by-5 when he's using this antenna.
