If you are going to mount an antenna do it right!  :)   First, loose the
Westfalia and get a Double Cab.  :)   Then get some AS/1729 military
antennas that run through an antenna tuner and then to a 100W HF radio that
will cover CB frequencies and a whole bunch more.  See http://www.syncro.ca

For my Westfalia, I have more of a problem as I have a high top version with
no luggage rack.  I will be mounting a CB antenna just above the rear engine
intake vent - the antenna will be a 1/4 wave coil loaded unit.  It will
*just* be taller than my camper top.  It isn't optimal at the corner of the
vehicle, but there is a large ground plane next to it - just as much as the
front.  I will also have an easy time with the RG-58 coax cable as it can
run under the van and then up the vent tunnel to the antenna.  I will be
running an antenna tuner with this too and an HF radio as well - should be
good to about the 40m band.
