In a further chime-in - the first limited accesses hiway in Canada opened in Canada in 1939 (a year before the one in Pasadena). Now called the QEW (for Queen Elizabeth Way - named for the Queen Mum, the present monarch's late mother). It runs from Fort Erie (across from Buffalo NY to Toronto. The first section to open was in St Catharines Ont, my home town, where there is decent vanagon mechanic. See:

I don't think any vanagons attending the dedication. There is is a photo of King George and his Queen, Elizabeth, looking spiffy.

If I recall, the American Interstate system was created by the Eisenhower (spelling?) administration to move things incase of war. Thats why all the early interstates led to/from or were routed next to military bases. I always wondered where the "interstate" hiways in Hawaii went to (interstate =between states) and when you notice how many out of state licence plates there are in Hawaii, it makes sense that they must lead somewhere.
