Turns out the mechanic had put back an old gasket and with no sealant. thanks to Peterson's Automotive for getting my van right in and tearing it down to that point before insisting it was the head gasket! And throwing in a safety check.

I knew I shold have tried consulting the list first as I now have a phone/modem to go with my laptop.

And I'll never forget the line - "we can't help it if you have an old car and something else goes wrong"....
