Subject: sliding side door rebuild
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

I have the benefit of owning an 89 wolfsburg that has been pretty well taken care of. The sliding door on the side rolls like its on glass. It's really smooth and easy to open and close.

My 87 syncro on the other hand rolls like its on gravel. I have cleaned all the tracks and wiped down the rollers so there is no dirt. I lubed the tracks. it still rolls pretty bad and is noisy to open can close.

Anybody done their side door and got it to roll like new?

What things should I look for to make sure its rolling its best? does replacing the bearing rollers help? Is there any difference to the 89 that can be retrofit to the 87?

I am thinking its metal on metal and any rust or wear tends to "rough up" the track and even if bearings are new they still have a rough road to run on. Emery cloth may help this. It would be cool if somebody out there sold new track strips of say nylon or similar. Sure would be nice to get it to roll nice again.

Lastly, Isnt the side door on the vanagon cool? I love being able to get in the van when some idiot has left me no room on the side of my car.

Thanks,

Doug
