Last house we owned was on a busy road, but had a nice wide driveway useful for collecting Vanagons. There was a space near the street which was useful for storing demo material, but also accumulated things when I'd clean out the garage. On more than one occasion I came outside to find someone parked in the driveway and rooting around through the stuff. Learned quickly to not leave anything valuable out there.

When sold the house we moved all the 'junk' out there to take to the dump, including two VW trannies which were slated for the scrap yard. Not only were those picked up, but the 2 dozen-odd gallons of paint which various owners accumulated were gone as well.

Lessons learned: if it's not bolted down, someone will think it's for them - and take it.

john
