Um Stan... I have the TDI intercooler that came with the TDI motor that I
installed... just need to force some air through it as there is no air
circulation at the back end of a Syncro to speak of.

I'd suggest that you find an intercooler from a Porsche, RX 7/8 or Saab and
just plumb it into your system.
Unless the flow is tuned to your Turbo Charger it isn't going to do any
thing but drag your engine down.
If you don't have a turbo charger you're wasting your time anyway.

On the Tristar I have, the air intake (stock) was on the right side
(passenger side) and had a cardboard barrier covering the space behind
(actually in front of) the taillight). In addition there is a tube
above that for connecting down to the air filter. This tube goes
through the member support for the cargo deck.
The drivers side has a similar opening (though there is tube, just a
hole) and there already are vent slits in the side of the tristar.
There is still a gap (about 3cm) between the deck member and the
"normal" top of the engine bay, which you'd have to seal off (it may be
behind some insulating material) if you truly want to seal the
intercooler away from the engine bay.
However, that area >IS< going to be exposed to road dust.
