If you didn't position the filler right it would splash back and cut off immediately. One day he was in Oregon (where it's illegal to pump your own gas) and the attendant put in about one gallon in his nearly empty tank, then got the automatic cutoff. When my friend tried to get him to fill it up the rest of the way, he just pointed to the 'no top-offs' sign.
