Stan and fellow vanagon types I would not spent one second on the OEM heads they crack and recrack. I would redo AMC heads they are by far a better casting and a better alloy in fact that's what I typically us on my own vans. The seats are a little softer than OEM but they never crack. The guides in the AMC heads are bigger on the OD so STD guides wont work and the press fit is important. The best method for guide removal is to core the old guide out this reduces the wall tension and allows the guide to slide out. This is not a job you can do at home ( ok you can do this at my house ) but take it to a good shop and have it done right Bob Donalds Boston engine
