Subject: Buying a Westy Help
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed

I am looking for an 87-91, 4-speed, westy (full camper) with AC. I understand over the years I'll have to replace things but basically want one that is ready for long-trips. Any idea how much I should be looking pay?

I've seen the various checklists. Anything on these particular models to look for besides coolant leaks? I've read about the dreaded gasket problem and my fear is getting one that has new gaskets but pitted-heads. A mechanic friend said that if I pull the spark plug and look at the top of the piston that'll give you a good idea if the head is pitted. Any checks you'd consider mandatory (ie coolant system pressure test) before sinking many thousands of dollar into one of these thing?

Anyone have any good or bad experiences with deals on the west coast?
