The Vanagon fuel pump is usually an extremely robust part often lasting for over 200K. Most failures are caused by something else. If a new pump failed quickly, you need to find the cause. My guess is that either the fuel tank is loaded with crud and letting debris get to the pump or the screen in the tank is clogging starving the pump for flow after a few miles of running. The crud clogging the screen will fall away after shut down allowing the engine to run again for a while until the screen clogs again.

I replaced a bad fuel pump with a rebuilt one. That worked great for 3 days, then may have tanked; I'm having it tested right now. My mechanic insists that he's never had success with rebuilt pumps, but I can't think of a non-mystical reason why a rebuilt should be any worse than any other. It's a simple electric motor fercryinoutloud. Have any of you had repeated bad exerience with rebuilt fuel pumps?
