The 1.8L is a much higher revving engine. If you don't mind winding it out this gives you more horsepower. The broader RPM range also lets you use the 4-speed more effectively -- it essentially makes the gaps between the gears seem smaller.

Because it has a smaller displacement, though, you lose torque.

A lot of people are just looking for fewer head gasket problems.
