Hi Volks,

Since we're still talking about fuel pumps, I'll inject another nugget of useful data: You don't HAVE to replace the original VW pump with the exact same thing. As long as you match the line diameter, fuel pressure, voltage and flow rates of the VW spec, you can use any pump sold at your favorite FLAPS.

When we were stranded at roadside with a dead fuel pump in Dad's Vanagon westy, I was told that a Vanagon pump would cost $200 and take two days to obtain. The second parts store sang the same song... But they also had an older gentleman behind the counter who was able to pull out a huge reference book and find me a ford pump and filter that would meet my needs. One that he had in stock, and that cost only $110 instead of $200. When I got back to the bus I bolted it up and we were back under way in just a few minutes.

Two years later that pump is still running fine.

Moral of *this* story: It pays to shop around.

If you're really interested in the gory details and want to see a pic of the new pump, my EveryBus 2002 trip report is online here: http://pottsfamily.ca/VW_type2/EB2002/

Happy trails,
