You have an air cooled van don't you? If so I have the exact reason. You have a leak, on top of the tank. The leak soaks the tube that blows heat into the van. Thats where it is coming from. Fix the leak in the tank, and before you install wrap the heater tube with plastic to prevent this from happening again.
